What's Happening At Gilcar Farm

10th September 2013

Holiday cottages are not our only business here at Gilcar Farm, as for three generations our family has worked the land in Emley, West Yorkshire and to this day we remain a successful dairy farm.

Running a farm involves lots of hard work, and there’s been plenty happening here over the past few weeks.

After very hot and dry weather conditions in July, we have finally made our second cut of silage, which will become winter food for the cattle. We have also cut sections of straw which we will use as bedding for the animals.

Our All-Crop harvester has also been in action, as we cut the crops before they became ripe to use as feed for the livestock.

Our other exciting news is that our heifers have been calving and two or three calves are being born every day! To cope with all the new arrivals, we have increased our number of fibreglass hutches from three to 12.

If you decide to stay in our holiday cottages - one of which was converted from a former milking parlour - you’ll be able to see some of our animals, and the work we do on the farm.

Most of the cattle and the main farm are located across a country lane, but the fields adjacent to the self-catering cottages are used for sheep, young calves, and pregnant cows and heifers.
